Surveying: Tree Identification

Sweet Chestnut in Brighton

Thursday- plot day.  This time we were continuing with the surveying and in particular tree identification.

I went out and bought the tome that is

Collins Gem - Trees

And in case that didn’t work out, I also arranged to get Bryn down there, and Stephan also came along too.  So we were now a team of 4.  After a general meander around the plot, and hanging out in the polytunnel doing some de-briefing, we set out on our mission.

I was armed with camera and clipboard with base map.  Stephan had bamboo labels, wire and pens.  Nick had a camera.  And Bryn… well he was taking his brain with him.  We made a good team, wondering around Bryn identifying the trees, me noting them down on the base map, Stephan labelling them and Nick taking photos.  Team work.

And the results: there are a fair few trees on our humble plot.  Things like: lime (small and large leaved), stone pine, yew, oak, willow, contorted willow, hazel, sweet chestnut, wild cherry, wild plum, peach, bay, wild pear, stone pine, walnut.

These days, if you go down to the plot today you’re in for a big surprise, little labels hanging in trees so you can find out what they are.

Next time… on the adventures at the plot… we will be looking at wind, water and sun…
